    I could make one out of think leather with no problem. My skills will allow that, however, I need a metal kit just for the looks.

  Easy to make only 4 pieces of metal and some leather. Can also be made with hinges. How ornate of a piece are you looking for? What type of metal? Most metal workers could make one fairly easy. Not as much shaping as western armor.

  There is a pattern here for a super simple Char aina...with a small amount of effort could be made really nice and authentic: web0.greatbasin.net/~fenwick...rick.htm. I've used this pattern myself and it requires almost no skills, just rolling and cutting no dishing. If working with leather is your thing just make one in leather...its period.
