I am looking for some info on pictish garb. The searches I have made have been very unhelpful so far.
My character is from about 800 AD, which is probably part of the problem, but there ya have it.
Thanks,
Cinead

Mon, May 19, 2008 - 2:35 PMNot sure how much info is on there, but Armor Archives has a thread about being a pictish warrior (circa 500 - 900 AD) on it.

The people on there that do the researching are pretty good from what I've seen.

Re: pictish garb
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 7:18 AMThe fact is that there is very little extant pictish clothing in existence (there is a hood which is believed to be pictish). Based on the art they left behind (carvings on stone) I'd say you could do worse than go with a fairly long tunic dyed in a natural color with a hood and possibly shoes based irish ones of the period. As for any armour (you didn't mention it , but in case you meant to) your in luck as there is no evidence for any armour here either...possibly the wealthiest had helms but other than their rather unique bucklers thats it.

Re: pictish garb
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 11:00 AMThanks for the info, I was mainly looking for off the field stuff. On the field, welllll, I am having to go more generic than I would like. It seems most of the helms of the time don't cover the face, mostly just a bar to protect the nose so I would need a big 'safety cage ' (which I don't like) to use it...did manage to find a helm I like that works tho.
As well, a lot of the info I have found seems to have them fighting in....shall we say minimal armor? Which to spare spectators eyes I don't think I would like to fight that way. ;)
Thanks again,

Tue, May 20, 2008 - 12:55 PMyeah there is not much you can do about that "safety cage"...other than do reenacting rather than SCA, but anyway loads of low profile armour under a spiff tunic and your good to go. best part of this is that that the low profile armour doesn't have to be authentic...what ever works, not like anyones gonna see it.
