I'm working on my first gorget/mantle combo and just put the first coat of dye on it. I put this coat on using a soft t-shirt and the daub/wipe on method. I was just wondering what techniques you all use to dye leather?

Re: dying (sp?) leather
Sat, December 15, 2007 - 12:47 AMI was just at the local Tandy leather factory earlier this week asking the same question of the guys there...
They advised using fist size scraps of sheep sherling rather than daubers for any reasonable sized piece of leather. One of the other guys recommended this dye sprayer thingie (technical term) if I was feeling more lazy and wasn't feeling too concerned with a perfect colour coverage.
The small (cotton ball sized) daugers are apparently only any good for small areas (is what they told me).
Hope this has been helpful. -

Re: dying (sp?) leather
Sun, December 16, 2007 - 6:20 PMI have used the foam paint brushes from Home Depot or Hobby Lobby now for more years than I care to remember. They have worked great so far, and they are pretty cheap to boot. -

Re: dying (sp?) leather
Sun, December 16, 2007 - 6:38 PMWear rubber gloves and use cheesecloth. That's how it's done commercially. It's easier and cheaper. -

Re: dying (sp?) leather
Mon, December 17, 2007 - 1:54 PMI use black liquid shoe polish... shake the bottle, pop the top, and you're good to go...

Re: dying (sp?) leather
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 7:29 AMI just use wool daubers and a tiny artist paint brush when doing detailed edge work.

Re: dying (sp?) leather
Tue, December 18, 2007 - 7:33 AMI soak it in the dye, let it dry and the run it through 2 rinse soaks. That stops the dye from bleading later.
For comercial dye like you get at tandy, I use an air brush or fleece scraps. -
