A tour group stopped at the Tower of London, and were given the chance to try out some of the ancient armour. Two men - one from Prague and another from Athens took up the opportunity. One donned a slightly damaged suit of plate armor and the other chain-mail, while the rest of the group crowded around. But in the full suits, the onlookers couldn't tell one from the other. "Is that the Czech wearing the plate armour?" asked one tourist. "No," replied another, "The Greek has the broken plate, and the Czech is in the mail."

Roman Rollers

Back in the days of the Roman Empire, the famous Emperor Nero instituted a new game. The players would take those little disks you set your glass on in order to protect the furniture, and see who could get the most distance rolling them across the floor. They were the first roller coasters. Back in those days, the disks were made of iron, and they would bet on whose disk would roll the farthest. They called them ferrous wheels.

The Angry King

Once, long ago, a king summoned all his provincial rulers to his castle. He was in a rather belligerent mood, and wanted to scare them into giving him extra taxes. Unknown to him, they met in secret on the way, and decided that they should agree to pay the extra, but they would at first pretend to refuse, so they could try to bargain down the actual amount extra they would have to pay.
They arrived at the king's castle, and gathered in the audience chamber. The king made his demands, and as agreed, they started to refuse. Unfortunately, they hadn't realized just how belligerent the king's mood was: as soon as they started to refuse, he got angry, and ordered his guards to kill them on the spot.
More than half of them were slain before they even realized what was happening, and the others had to do some very quick groveling to survive. After everything had settled down, those who remained explained to the king their plan, and the king was filled with remorse for his hasty actions.
The moral of the story?
- Don't hatchet your counts before they chicken.

The King's Pizza

One day (just before Christmas, probably), Good King Wenceslas decided that he was fed up with the food at the palace, so he phoned up his local Italian restaurant for a takeaway pizza. "Certainly, your Majesty" says the Manager, "Would you like your usual"? "Yes please," replied the King, "same as always - deep pan, crisp and even"
...wait....that's not right. That's the Rolling Stones! To begin with, people have frequently commented on my lack of taste (or as the polite ones say, my unique tastes) and I am FAR from being wealthy. Anyway, I do leather working as a hobby and I've been going about it for about 6 years now. My current pet projects are cuirboli and bracers. I got into leatherworking as a means of making leather objects that I couldn't afford to purchase outright. Of course there were some pretty ugly knife sheaths in the begining, but eventually they started looking nice enough to sell. Recently I've made everything from knife sheaths to custom leather carving, to a pair of sporrans for a local band.

Anyway, here I am! Hopefully I can be of assistance for someone here and, in turn, hopefully I can get some feedback from everyone else!

Well, i've come up against a bit of a roadblock while making my garb. I want my persona to be from southern France in the early to mid 1500's (from around 1520 to 1550. also, she's landed gentry but not very rich and certinally not important in any political way.). I can find TONS of information about English clothing, and a fair ammount on Italian clothing as well. But i can't seem to find any resources for French clothing. Does it differ significantly from English clothing of the same time period, and how? I also need references for both genders because my persona often tries to "pass". (a girl dressing up as a man.) Also, because she is from southern France, would it be appropreate to encorporate Italian styles into her wardrobe even if she's not related to any Italians?
http://new.photos.yahoo.com/tyrantatheart/album/576460762388746473

The client wanted something styled after the Choburg bascinet, as well as four different exchange visors. Everything is made of 1050 spring steel. The bascinet was raised from a welded cone as were the two pig nose visors. The perforated visor was raised from a flat sheet with no welds. A bar grill was also made, but not pictured.

Working with Patrick was a blast and I hope to head back out there some time in April to make more pretty things.

Help! My San Francisco garage was ransacked Saturday night, November 18. Thieves stole the beautiful Queen's dress I've worn at Folsom Faire, The Revels and at Valhalla; to be more precise, they took the bodice, sleeves and overskirt.

Designed and made by Liz Martin, this unique purple (okay, aubergine) velvet confection—beaded and pearled to within an inch of its life by the fabulous women of St. Matthews Guild—weighs at least 30 pounds.

The SFPD is looking for it. The officers who took the report say it's likely to turn up since it's so unusual; one of the officers is a Faire fan and even asked about Dickens.

As you shop Bay Area costume and thrift shops for your pleasure this season, please keep an eye out for the dress. It's tough to miss. (Yes, we've had security issues before. I was taking the dress up to my Dad's for safekeeping at Thanksgiving. Sigh.)

Generous reward offered. Please spread the word.

Thanks so much.
I just inherited a suit of studded leather armor that has been sitting in a duffle bag and very wet climate for the past 20 years. The helm is awesome, just needs new padding, but the leather, I am afraid, my not be salvageable. I thought I would ask before I gave up though. It is very moldy smelling, and quite stiff. There are steel plates on the inside of the arms and legs. Some of the rivets holding it together are a bit corroded, but most are still ok. Really, I most concerned with the leather. Are there any fixes that anybody can help with? I'll upload a picture of it to the pictures section of this tribe.

for those who don't know, charcoal wrought iron is the form of iron used everywhere before steel was invented and before industrial methods were discovered for refining iron out of iron ore. it's what medieval suits of armor were made out of and does not rust like mild steel. it also takes shapes with much less effort on the hammering end of things. perhaps if you know of some blacksmiths who i might talk to, that would be useful too.

When hand-sewing garb -- In my case, early celtic/briton items out of homespun plaid fabric -- what stitch do you normally use to simply sew the seams together?? I've been pondering this since I can't get my friend's sewing machine to cooperate. To my mind, a simple running stitch would be most likely, but seems like it would also be on the weak side. I'm NOT a strong sewer at all, and make largish, sloppy stitching. Another stitch I've considered is a backstitch...or am I off-base there?

Greetings,

I was looking over armour on the net, because it's a slow day at work. I found a article for how to make fluted armour. I've a made a little bit, elbows, knees. I'm a long way from the skill needed for that.

But a question popped into my head. How in days before the two woman of metal working. (Britney and Beverly) how was metal cut? Better yet, I'm sure your average 1480's German blacksmith wasn't getting sheets of steel to cut. How did the metal come they used to make armour?

Thank you for the information,

I'm one of those people that if I don't have my glasses on, I can't see 2 millimeters in front of me...and that's without anything in front of my face (ie: grill, visor, etc). The thought of fighting has been GREATLY reduced because most of the helms I've seen out there do not allow for the visually impaired to keep their "eyes" on underneath.

And no...I can't do contacts (eye allergies to every brand of contact solution out there)...and no, laser surgery is not an option (it wouldn't correct the vision problems I have). I'm left with only being able to wear glasses...and if I ever intend to be talked into fighting (which wouldn't be that difficult)...I want to be able to see who and/or WHAT I'm hitting or poking away at.

Another nice helmet liner that I use in my Scots Burgonet is one of those South American conical felt "pixie hats" that you see at some Faires -- just push the felt up into the comb and trim the bottom edge so no felt shows. You want to leave felt liners removable, so that the sweat can be dried without rusting the metal -- otherwise "rust gets in your eyes".

Hey all,

I'm new to this tribe, semi-active in the SCA for almost three years. I am determined to become authorized in time for NEXT Pennsic.

I have a 16th c. scot persona, and I would like to wear the full kilt on the field. This is entirely bogus, of course, 'cos the first thing a scot would have done is to lose the kilt and fight in shirt-tails (tied between the legs). But I'll do the best I can as SCA safety rules and regs allow.

So, I'm thinking we go the Braveheard route and hardened leather brigantine, full greaves, etc. What else should I be thinking about? Anyone here fight in leather plate/brig before? Did you feel protected enough?

Any particular types or treatments of leather, in terms of thickness or stiffness that you would warn me off of or steer me towards?

Interested in hearing your replies!

Hello all, I recently joined here but have not posted until now. This is post is in relation to armor for wearing at SCA events such as Pennsic War. First I want to say I am not a fighter. I’ve never fought in armor and I really have to intentions of fighting in armor but I will need to wear some to War this year. Why? Well, I take photographs of the battles but am unhappy with having to shoot from the sidelines and for some things, that just will NOT do!

I’ve met with my local Baron as well as one of the Marshals and my King and they are helping me to figure out how to get onto the battlefield legally. We’ve come to the determination that I am going to get certified as a “Combat Archer” since the rules for them allow for ½ gauntlets, an important feature for using my camera. They say I should design a tabard to cover myself that let’s people know I am a non-combatant somehow and then just stay out of the thick of the fray, which I think is a great idea. I don’t want to be where the metal meets the meat but I do want to be closer than the sidelines in order to get the shots I want.

What I need to know is, what are the basic pieces I will need to wear? What is the rules regarding the grill on the helmet? I want to figure out how I’ll use my viewfinder and if I need to mount an extension to the grill. About how much does a basic kit cost? I don’t need anything fancy, just functional.

For those who have not seen my work please feel free to go to http://www.pbase.com/darter02/sca but ignore the 1st gallery. I had a crappy camera and it shows…

Regards,
Darter
